Two puffins standing on a rock in Orkney

Westray trip

You may wish to take a trip to the outer isles. For example, there is an 80-minute ferry to Westray to visit the small sea stack known as the Castle o'Burrian, which between late April and mid-August is the perfect place to spot puffins in Orkney.

The Old Man of Hoy in Orkney with a view of the cliffs and sea

Hoy trip

Another popular option for a day trip is the island of Hoy, the highest island in the archipelago, and just 30 minutes away by boat. Along the west coast of Hoy stands the Old Man of Hoy, towering out of the sea at a height of 450 feet (137m). This is the UK’s tallest sea stack. From the beautiful valley of Rackwick, the walk to the Old Man is approximately a three-hour round trip.
